Mobile Web Design

Here lately I have had the chance to design a few applications and mobile versions of websites. Designing for mobile devices is more about designing the user experience than just something that looks pretty. You want to mobilize the user not just miniaturize content.

In the US alone at the time of writing this there are 30 million of the 176 million web users accessing the mobile web. Which means for a designer working with an IA or UX person is extremely important, as this part of the process of determining the user flow and wire-framing of the experience can make or break an app or mobile website. One thing to note is that with more and more people coming online through mobile devices their first experience with the web may be on a mobile device. So, you want that experience to be positive and interactive.

At Rockfish Interactive we strive to meet our clients goals and needs on mobile projects so we know how important that overall experience and flow can be. Over the past year I've had the pleasure to work on several apps currently in the iPhone App Store and some that are for private use only. Also, I have had the opportunity to define mobile web presences for some of our clients and these projects offer many challenges and rewards. One thing that I read that I always keep in mind when designing for mobile devices is that you want to mobile the user, not the device. Meaning that design here is meant to be functional you must address how the user interacts with the device while on the go. Trust me these are the questions that will come up in your creative reviews. I've heard this part of the process dubbed the MEX (Mobile User Experience). I think there is huge potential moving forward in the mobile area as smart phones get smarter and new smaller devices come online. If your a young creative looking to get into Interactive Design I would highly recommend looking into and focusing on defining mobile experiences not just pretty apps. Below are some examples of wireframes and UI pictures I've taken over the last year.
