Who Inspires Me?

July 28, 2008 14:03 by joey

This past weekend I came across an interview someone did with the Artist Shepard Fairey. I have followed this guy for as far back as I can remember and he plays a huge roll in inspiring me in both his art and his work habbit. It was interesting to see how he has become not only a world renowned artist but also now has his own line of clothing, does gallery exhibits, and recently has started DJing and mixing cds. Even with all the publicity now, he mentioned he never forgets to go out and do what made him famous, "Bomb with stickers," even when he's with his family. Most people have seen his work and probably most know him as "OBEY". Here is the link to the article and also, here is a link to some of his more famous pieces.

Ghost of Monte Ne

June 19, 2008 15:21 by joey

So my buddy Bob here at the office entered a photography contest on the JPG Magazine site (http://jpgmag.com/). It's a picture from a while back when we found this old abandoned Resort and tagged the walls. Here is a link to his submission http://jpgmag.com/photos/773124

This place is off of highway 540 and exit 83 headed towards Beaver Lake and the Monte Ne area. If your ever out that way check out the place it's really cool. And check back on the site and see if he wins.

June 3, 2008 14:40 by joey
This has to be the best mashup of street art and video work. Congrats to those who put in the time and effort. i could see this style as a movie, just think the boys down in Brazil that do character design could make some badass movies in this style.

Slaughter Pen Jam

October 25, 2007 21:46 by joey.nelson

Bentonville, Arkansas 10/27/2007

The 1st annual "Slaughter Pen Jam" is coming soon!!!
Pro Entry: $15
Amateur Entry: $10
Spectator entry will be $5head + donations and proceeds will go to the Stephen Murray Family.
Stephen Murray Background: On June 22nd at the AST Dew Tour BMX Dirt Finals, Stephen took a horrific fall on the final set of the dirt section while sending a double back flip. Stephen has received career ending injuries to his spinal cord and vertebrae.
Unlike the NFL or other major professional sports which have unions that provide funds to athletes who are injured, BMX has nothing like this. BMX however is much more like a family than any other sport. Now is the time we need to reach out and support one of our family members like never before. (source; www.stephenmurrayfamilyfund.com)

We have food, music, and and the perfect venue (we have been working on the park every week in order to build it up to a Pro level), we just need your support to take this event to the next level and provide aid for a good cause.
Thanks for all your help,
Woody (Nathan Woodruff) 479-966-0286
Check out www.slaughterpen.com for more info on the venue itself.

Only in Arkansas - Monte Ne (Graffiti)

September 30, 2007 23:45 by joey.nelson

Ok here's an "Only in Arkansas" that I like, we found this place on the internet on some underground ozark site, this place looked pretty cool so me and a friend headed out to shoot some pics and check it out. It turns out it's an aboandoned million-dollar resort of a presidential candidate from the early 1900's, located as Monte Ne. We were told Beaver lake was up now by the californian at the gas station, as she was pointed out by the Arkansasan fellow at the table, who then showed us a B/W pic from the 70's of it. There he said, there under the water lies an ampitheater that was built alongside the Inn it's prettty cool too.

The place was a 3-story concrete structure that had seen its fair share of weathering that's for sure. Solid concrete, you could see where it had been chipped and some fallen from other floors, the weird thing was there were no stairs to the second or third floors (I told Bob we needed a rope.) Getting to the second floor was no problem but we couldn't go up anymore from there.

The place was cool every inch of the walls was coved with graffiti, messages, fairy tales, and some humorous vulgarities. One common message that seems to always exist on the these type of walls, which tells the times, is that of love, peace, war, and hate and could definately befound in the messages and scribbles, many biblical and racial slurs were even present, the devil himself was referenced a few times. Every person and their momma told there significant other how they felt wether it was of happiness or of I even saw damnnation to one lady.

There were 6 fireplaces that we saw and there was still the third floor left unseen, it seems one person belives that this is where your suppose to put the "bodies???" Not sure on that one but it added to the ambiance of the room.  I didn't see any tresspassing signs and the people at the gas station acted like they tell people where it is all the time, so it seemed a pretty safe place. It sits right on the lake, maybe a stones throw away, and would be a perfect backdrop for a sunset or sunrise pic giving strk contrast to the writings on the wall...

September 22, 2007 20:40 by joey.nelson

So i went out to Slaughter Pen today and got another peice in before it got dark, there was some other kids out there and one wanted to join me in getting up so I told him to grab a can and start writing. He did alright for a TOY, I had to go over and make it pop for him but it turned out alright. Once this place gets covered its going to be something to see and ride of course. I'm going to do the top of the platforms too now so eventually I'll get this whole park covered.
